Fishing report July 8th, 2025. South County San Luis Obispo. Waves were dynamic: starting ~2ft, building to an estimated 6ft offshore, then mellowing to ~3ft at sunset.
High tide was 8:52pm; I fished the incoming tide towards it.
Wind was a moderate onshore breeze, but my 1.25oz Carolina rig cast fine.
Water was 56 degrees, relatively clear with a moderate stain and plenty of churned-up “shake”—a condition I like, consistent with past success, perhaps stirring food or hiding fish from predators, boosting their confidence.
I used Battlestar Soft Candy Perch Bait in Blurple Silver Flake and Dark Green MORF. My hook was an Owner Finesse Sniper, size #2; still evaluating it. New rigging: two 1/64oz tungsten nail weights, side-by-side on the bait’s bottom, hidden just skin deep to keep the hook tip up. All other gear was consistent: Okuma 10’6” medium rod, Shimano Vanford C5000XG reel, 28lb Alien Braid.
Perch weren’t in their usual spot today. I saw a sea lion, wondering if it chased the school out. Patches of sand crabs were abundant at the high tide line; I wondered if perch would feed right to the shoreline at late high tide after sunset. No birds or bait fish observed. I combed the beach, focusing on waves and whitewash near deep cuts. I landed one small perch, one medium perch, and one oversized surf smelt—possibly a new personal best, which salvaged the day!
My tip for today: Remember to check on the sharpness of your hook tip throughout your session. Today I noticed my hook tip became fairly dull long before the end of my session. If it gets dull, cut it off and re-rig with a sharp hook!
